Remove a node

Mark a drained node removed in the local fleet registry without wiping disk or moving cells.

Update the local fleet registry so a node is recorded as removed after you have finished taking it out of service.

peren node remove writes membership state under the data directory. It does not wipe disk. It does not move cells. It does not stop a running process.

Prerequisites

  • a validated fleet config path for the host that holds the registry;
  • the node UUID to remove;
  • a draining registry record for that node, unless you pass --force.

Use the two drain paths in Drain a node before removal when you need registry drain, live admission refusal, or both. This page does not repeat those procedures.

Procedure

Required:

  • config path (positional);
  • --node — UUID of the membership record to remove.

Optional:

  • --force — skip the draining precondition.

Without --force, removal refuses unless the registry already records that node as draining.

peren node remove peren.toml --node 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001

Representative output:

node 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001 removed

State change: updates $PEREN_DATA_DIR/fleet/nodes.json (or ./data/fleet/nodes.json) to removed. Prior reason and peer address fields are preserved when present.

peren node remove peren.toml --node 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001 --force

Verification

peren node health peren.toml

Confirm the removed node’s process is stopped separately if it must no longer serve traffic. Registry removal does not prove disk wipe or cell relocation.

Failure

Result Cause Next action
node must be drained before removal no draining record and --force omitted drain via Drain a node, then retry, or pass --force only when that precondition is intentionally skipped
